Wang Huning elected as chairman of National Committee of Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference
14th National Committee of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference elects leaders
Xinhua News Agency, Beijing, March 10 – The first session of the 14th CPPCC National Committee held the third plenary session on the afternoon of the 10th to elect the leaders of the 14th CPPCC National Committee. Wang Huning, member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee, was elected chairman of the CPPCC National Committee, and 23 vice-chairmen of the CPPCC National Committee were elected at the meeting.
Before the election results were announced, Wang Yang, chairman of the 13th CPPCC National Committee, came to the conference venue to congratulate the upcoming new Standing Committee of the CPPCC National Committee. When the host of the meeting announced that Wang Huning had been elected as the chairman of the 14th National Committee of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference, Wang Yang stood up to congratulate him, shook hands with Wang Huning warmly, and the audience burst into long applause.
The vice-chairmen of the 14th CPPCC National Committee elected at the meeting are: Shi Taifeng, Hu Chunhua, Shen Yueyue, Wang Yong, Zhou Qiang, Pabala Grelanger, Ho Hau Wah, Leung Chun-ying, Battelle, Su Hui, Shao Hong, Gao Yunlong, Chen Wu, Mu Hong, Xian Hui, Wang Dongfeng, Jiang Xinzhi, Jiang Zuojun, He Baoxiang, Wang Guangqian, Qin Boyong, Zhu Yongxin, Yang Zhen.
The meeting elected Wang Dongfeng as Secretary-General of the 14th National Committee of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference, and elected 299 members of the Standing Committee of the 14th National Committee of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference.
The meeting was held at the Great Hall of the People at 3 p.m., presided over by Shi Taifeng. There were 2,169 members of the 14th National Committee of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference, and 2,125 members actually attended, meeting the number required for election.
According to the election method for the first session of the 14th CPPCC National Committee, secret ballots are used for the election of the General Assembly. The chairman, vice-chairman, secretary-general and standing committee members are elected by equal numbers. Candidates who receive more than half of the votes in favor of all committee members are elected.
Before the election begins, the host of the meeting first asks the staff to read out the list of chief voters and scrutineers. The supervisor and scrutineer were immediately in place, and the scrutineer checked the situation of the 23 ballot boxes in the audience. Two chief inspectors reported the inspection results to the meeting.
Afterwards, the staff began to distribute ballots. There are two ballots, one for the election of the chairman, vice-chairman, and secretary-general, and one for the election of the standing committee members.
After the staff read out the requirements for filling out the ballot papers, the committee members began to write the ballot papers. After the voting begins, the chief voter and the scrutineer will be in place and vote first, and the members will go to the ballot box in their seat to vote.
After the staff counts the returned ballots, the chief voter submits the voting result report to the meeting host. The host of the meeting announced that the election is valid.
After the votes were counted, the staff announced the election results. The results of the election showed that 323 candidates for the chairman, vice chairman, secretary general and standing committee members all received more than half of the total number of votes of all committee members and were all elected.
The average age of the newly elected chairman and vice chairman of the CPPCC National Committee is 65.3 years old. Among the vice-chairmen, 11 are members of the Communist Party of China, 12 are non-Communist members, 4 are from ethnic minorities, and 4 are women. The average age of the newly elected Standing Committee members is 60.8 years old, of which 195 are non-CCP members, accounting for 65.2%; 32 are from ethnic minorities; and 48 are women.
All the members congratulated the new Standing Committee of the National Committee of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference with warm applause.
